Mode 2 Interview

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

Mode 2 is what some may refer to as All City. Actually, scratch that - All World. He learned his craft alongside some of the mainstays of the UK hip-hop scene in Central London in the 1980’s and has witnessed the evolution of the art form, from a word of mouth movement to a multi-billion dollar industry. As a member of the renowned graffiti crew, The Chrome Angelz, Mode 2 was one of the first wave of British writers to make an impact on the public consciousness and really introduce this exciting new style of art to the masses. He has painted all over the planet, and having spent the late 80’s and early 90’s in mainland Europe, he has since returned to the UK and continues to produce his own work and crusade for the cause of bringing graffiti to a wider audience.

Graffiti laws ban marker pens

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

TOUGHER laws for graffiti offences will outlaw the carrying of marker pens and etching implements in New South Wales in some instances, the State Government says.

The laws, which come into effect today, follow last month’s Government announcement that graffiti crime was escalating and costing NSW more than $100 million a year.

The package of laws will help tackle the proliferation of graffiti, NSW Attorney General John Hatzistergos said.

“The community has had enough of having to repair damage left behind by this senseless crime,” Mr Hatzistergos said.

The legislation makes it illegal to possess implements with the intention of using them to damage or deface premises or property, a law previously applicable only to spray paint cans.

Fair Trading representatives and police officers will also be able to issue on-the-spot fines to retailers who fail to properly secure spray paint cans.

Damaging or defacing property carries a fine of $2200 or six months jail, while possessing an instrument suspected of being used to graffiti property attracts a fine of $1100 or three months jail.

KAWS Interview

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

Over the course of a career that has variously infuriated anti-graffiti task force officers and enthralled Japanese street couture collectors — meaning winning props from hip-hop superstars Kanye West and Pharrell Williams — the pop artist KAWS has carved a unique niche for himself. The soft-spoken 34-year-old Jersey City native, born Brian Donnelly, created a new business model that bridges the high-low culture divide in ways that would have made steam come out of Andy Warhol’s ears.

By parlaying vandalism into a brand identity as a purveyor of mass-produced collectible toys, KAWS became a bona fide subculture celebrity with a recognizable presence in street fashion.

But now, KAWS is at a career turning point. In spite of his renown in subcultural circles (which galleristas and museum directors have historically snobbed), he is now being mentioned in the same breath as pop art luminaries, such as Takashi Murakami, Keith Haring and Jeff Koons. And while KAWS has proven himself perfectly capable of trafficking his own pop offerings — on skateboard decks, stickers, T-shirts and sneakers — KAWS has infiltrated the rarefied world of institutional art after being held at arm’s distance from it for much of his career. Pretty fly for a graf guy.

MTA Crew Los Angeles got busted ?

Monday, den 2. February 2009

MTA Crew L.A.

The news say, that the MTA Crew from Los Angeles got bustet. The crew is world famous for their giant crew piece in the L.A. River. It was said that the cleaning of the piece would costs 3.7 millon US-Dollars because hazardous materials crews must create an elaborate dam to capture all the paint and runoff water so it doesn’t get into the riverbed.

You can get more information on that here and at the Santa Barbara News. Read it carefully and draw a conclusion out of it.

In the post you can find two videos. One that shows the giant ‘tag’ in the L.A. River from a helicopter and one where you can see how the bust must have been.
